Why Stein by Design exists
The best English classrooms ask students to do more than identify devices, answer questions, or complete assignments. They ask students to interpret, question, connect, discuss, and build ideas of their own.
But creating the scaffolds, discussion structures, writing supports, and assessments that make that possible takes time.
Stein by Design grew from that tension: a desire for rigorous materials that are intellectually ambitious, visually thoughtful, and realistic for a working teacher to use.
Rigor should mean deeper thinking.
Not simply more work, harder texts, or fewer supports.
Scaffolds should lead to independence.
Support should help students reach sophisticated thinking, not reduce the level of thinking expected.
Resources should save teachers time.
A resource should solve enough of the instructional problem that the teacher is not rebuilding it on Sunday night.
